rhetoric（弁論術・修辞）+ -al（〜に関する）で、「修辞的な」。rhetoric は、言葉を効果的に使って聞き手に訴える技術をいう。内容だけでなく、どう言えば相手に強く伝わるかという表現の工夫が手掛かりになる。

a rhetorical question は、返答を求めるより、問いの形で自分の考えを強く示す「修辞疑問」。「誰がそんなことを望むだろうか」と言って、「誰も望まない」と伝えるような使い方。question と組にして、質問の形を使った主張と覚えると、「修辞」という訳が具体的になる。
