中世ラテン語 scandalōsus = scandalum（つまずきの石・罪の誘因）+ -ōsus（〜に満ちた形容詞を作る）。
人を信仰からつまずかせるものが原義で、そこから世間を騒がせる「醜聞の・けしからぬ」になった。a scandalous affair・scandalous behaviour のように使う。
名詞は scandal（醜聞）、動詞は scandalize（憤慨させる）。つまずきの石という出発点が、今も「人を躓かせる出来事」という色を残している。
