square（四辺の等しい四角形）+ -ly（形容詞から副詞を作る）。まずは「四角く・直角に」、つまり角がきっちり合っている状態を表した。
そこから「ずれずに真正面から」の意味が育ち、hit it squarely（ど真ん中に当てる）、face the problem squarely（問題に正面から向き合う）、squarely responsible（まさしく責任がある）のように使う。「直接に・まともに」はこの流れ。
-ly は *leyg-（似た・平らな）に連なり、「〜のような」を表す like と出どころを同じくする語尾。
