supposedの語源と覚え方

suppose の過去形・過去分詞。頭の sup は「下に」、pose は「置く」で、人々がそう置いている＝そう思われている、という含みがある。そこから be supposed to は、予定・決まり・期待による「〜することになっている」を表す。
We are supposed to meet at noon. は正午に会う約束があること。You're not supposed to park here. は、駐車が決まりに反するという言い方。
