thermocouple は thermo-「熱」と couple「二つ一組」の組合せで、「熱電対」を意味する。異なる種類の金属線を組み合わせ、温度を測るために用いる素子だ。二本の線が組になって働くことが couple の手がかりで、熱に関する測定をするので thermo- が付いている。
