whiplash は whip（むち）+ lash（むちのひも・むち打ち）で、むちのひもや、それで鋭く打つ動きに関わる語。そこから、頭が急に前後へ振られることで起こる首のけがを「むち打ち」と呼ぶ。しなるむちの先が急に振り返る動きが、名前の手掛かりになっている。
suffer whiplash は「むち打ちのけがをする」。さらに emotional whiplash なら、出来事や気持ちが急変して大きく振り回されることを比喩的に表す。急に振られ、逆方向へ引き戻される動きを中心に置くと、道具に関する意味、首のけが、心理的な急変をそれぞれ区別して思い出せる。
