white（白い）+ board（板）。「白い板」にマーカーで書く、そのままの組み立て。黒い板の blackboard（黒板）に対して作られた語。
The manager wrote the schedule on the whiteboard.（マネージャーが予定をホワイトボードに書いた）のように会議でよく出る。white は印欧祖語 *ḱweyt-（輝く）にさかのぼり、「光って明るい色」が白。wheat（小麦）も「白い粉になる穀物」として同族。
board（板）は billboard（屋外広告板）・cupboard（食器棚）などにも入っている。また「板＝テーブルを囲む人々」から board of directors（取締役会）、「船の板の上に乗る」から boarding pass（搭乗券）・on board（搭乗して）にも広がった。
