ラテン語 ante（前に） がそのまま英語に入った語。根の *h₂ent-（前面・額）は「顔の正面」から「前」へ広がったもの。
ポーカーで、カードが配られる前に全員が場に出す参加料が ante。そこから up the ante / raise the ante（賭け金を上げる→要求水準や危険度を引き上げる）という比喩表現が生まれた。
ante- は「時間・順序が前」で、antenatal（出生前の）・antecedent（先行するもの）・antechamber（控えの間）と同じ。綴りの似た anti-（反対の）と混同しやすいので、e か i かで意味が変わると意識しておく。
