attenuate（弱める・細くする）+ -ion（行為・結果・状態） で「減衰」。ラテン語 attenuātiō（弱めること・減少）にさかのぼり、-tiō（動作や結果を表す）が付いた形。
芯にあるのは *ad-（〜へ）+ *tenh₂-（伸ばす）で、「引き伸ばして薄く細くする」イメージ。物が細くなるように、信号・光・音・放射線が進むうちに強さを失っていくのが attenuation。
