古代ローマでは、公職に立候補する人が白い衣を着た。candidate は、その 「白い衣を着た人」 を表すラテン語に由来する。candid（率直な・偽りのない）も「白く輝く」という意味につながる仲間で、二つを一緒に覚えられる。
白い衣で人前に出る立候補者を思い浮かべれば、candidate＝候補者と結びつく。試験に臨む「受験者」、a candidate for surgery（手術の対象になりうる人）のように、選挙以外にも使う。
candidacy（立候補・候補者の地位）と対で覚える。候補として名を連ねる人というイメージを持てば、選挙にも試験にも同じ語が使える理由がつかめる。
