中英語 chekmat（詰み・完敗） から。chek（王手）+ mat（詰んだ・打ち負かされた） で、チェスで王が逃げ場を失った終局の宣言。
chek はラテン語 scaccus（王手） に、全体はアラビア語 شَاه مَاتَ に連なる。ここから check（王手をかけて動きを止める→点検する・阻止する）が生まれ、checkmate は「王手をかけたうえで、もう手がない状態」という一段深い意味を担う。
比喩では「相手を完全に封じ込める・完敗させる」。動詞としても使い、checkmate an opponent。口語では単に mate とも言う。
