中英語 clete(楔・塊) から。もとは「くさび形の木片」で、そこから船の甲板などに取り付けてロープを巻き留める T 字型の金具 を指すようになった。
アメリカでは複数形 cleats で、靴底の突起(スパイク)や、その突起の付いた運動靴そのものを指す。football cleats(アメフト用スパイクシューズ)、a pair of cleats。
「くさび形の出っ張りで、滑らないように食い止めるもの」と押さえると、船具・靴底・建材のどの用法も一本につながる。
