crystal（原子が規則正しく並んだ固体）+ -graphy（記録の方法・研究分野）。「結晶を記述する学問」＝結晶学。
X線を当てて回折像から原子の並びを割り出す X-ray crystallography（X線結晶構造解析）が代表で、DNA の二重らせんもこの手法から明らかになった。
-graphy の背景は *gerbʰ-（刻む・削る）。geography・biography と同じ作りで、-graphy が付いたら「〜を記述する学問」。
