eye（目）+ glass（ガラス）で「目に当てるガラス」→「片眼鏡・レンズ」。eye は古英語 ēage、glass は古英語 glæs から来ていて、どちらも古くからある英語の語。
両目用の眼鏡は複数形の eyeglasses（または glasses）が普通。an eyeglass store（眼鏡店）、an eyeglass case（眼鏡ケース）のように、名詞の前に置くときは単数形になる。「眼鏡＝レンズが2枚」だから複数形と覚える。
