grand（壮大な・立派な）+ stand（立つ・観覧のための台）。競技場で 「一段高く立てた立派な観覧席」、つまり正面スタンドを指す。stand の芯は *steh₂-（立つ） で、bandstand（野外音楽堂）と同じ「立てた台」の系統である。
そこから動詞が生まれた。よく見えるスタンドの観客を意識して大げさに振る舞う、つまり 「見栄を張る・受け狙いのことをする」。The senator is just grandstanding.（あの議員はただの人気取りだ）のように、政治批評でよく使う。
