中英語 hachet は、古フランス語 hache（斧）に小さいものを表す語尾 -et（ラテン語 -ittus 由来）が付いた形。つまり「小さな斧」で、片手で振れる手斧を指す。
-et は islet（小島）・pocket（小さな袋）・cigarette と同じ指小の語尾。前の語を「小型版」にする働きをする。
hache と同じ系統の語に hash（細かく刻む）がある。bury the hatchet（手斧を埋める＝和解する）は、北米先住民の慣習から来た言い回し。
