「こぶ・盛り上がり」を意味する hump と同じ系統の語で、動詞では背中を丸めて突き出す hunch over（前かがみになる）の形でよく使う。
名詞では背中のこぶを指すほか、「根拠はないがそんな気がする」という予感、つまり直感を指す。play a hunch は勘に頼って動くこと、I have a hunch that… は「なんとなく〜という気がする」。
hunchback（猫背・背中の曲がった人）も同じ hunch。
