英語の hump（こぶ・盛り上がり） は、中期低地ドイツ語 hump からの借用と考えられている。ラテン語系の学術語ではなく、ゲルマン系の口語から入った、丸く盛り上がった形を指す素朴な語である。
名詞の「こぶ」から動詞に転じて「こぶ状に盛り上がる・背を丸める」、さらに「こぶを背負う→重い物を担いで運ぶ」へ広がった。「丸く盛り上がる」一点を押さえれば、humpback（こぶのある背→ザトウクジラ）・speed hump（路面のこぶ）・camel's hump（ラクダのこぶ）はすべて同じ像でつながる。
