inch(1フィートの12分の1の長さ)+ worm(細長い虫)で「1インチの虫」。体を弓なりに縮めては伸ばして進む姿が、少しずつ長さを測っているように見えることからの名前。
日本語の「尺取り虫」もまったく同じ発想で、単位が尺かインチかの違いしかない。
動詞の inch(少しずつ動く)も同じ語で、inch forward はじりじりと前進すること。
