instead は in（中で・その位置に）+ stead（場所・立場・役割）。もともとは「その場所に」「その立場に」という発想で、あるものの位置に別のものを置くことから、「その代わりに」という意味になった。

stead は「立つ場所・立場」を表し、*steh₂-（立つ）とつながる。steady（しっかり立っている→安定した）や understand（下に立って支える→理解する）を思い出すと、stead を見たら「立つ場所・役割」と読むことができる。
