jailの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 caveola(小さな檻)にさかのぼる。-ulus は「小さい」を表す部品(指小辞)で、「小さな檻」がそのまま「牢屋」になった語である。
同じ「檻」の系列からは cage(かご・檻)も来ている。jail=人を入れる小さな檻と押さえれば、動詞の「投獄する」(be jailed for fraud)も自然につながる。
イギリス式のつづり gaol は同じ語が別ルートで入った形で、発音はどちらも「ジェイル」。prison が本刑を科す刑務所を指すのに対し、jail は未決や短期の拘置所を指すことが多い。
