launchの語源と覚え方
覚え方
英語 launch は、古ノルド語 lanchier（打ち出す・投げる）に由来する。「勢いをつけて外へ送り出す」という動きが中心で、船を水面へ送り出す「進水させる」、ロケットを空へ放つ「発射する」という意味になった。
何かを勢いよく動き始めさせることから、商品・事業・計画を「開始する」という意味にも広がる。新製品を launch するとは、市場へ送り出して活動を始めることである。
launch は「外へ打ち出す」と覚えると、進水・発射・開始の三つの意味をまとめられる。物体を投げ出す場合にも、企画を世に出す場合にも、共通しているのは「出発点から前へ送り出す」イメージである。
