英語 mood は中英語 mood(気分・心の状態)をそのまま受け継いだ語である。
そのときどきの「気分・心の状態」を表す語として定着し、in a good mood(機嫌がいい)、mood swing(気分の浮き沈み)のように使われる。転じて、場や作品全体が醸し出す「雰囲気」を指すこともある。
mood は一時的な心の状態を表す語だと意識すると、性格そのものを表す character などと混同しにくくなる。
