multistory

multi-（複数の）+ story（建物の階）。ここでの story は「物語」ではなく「階」の意味で、multistory は「複数階建ての」。

つまずきやすいのは綴りである。イギリス式では階を storey と書き、複数形は storeys。アメリカ式は物語も階も story で、複数形 stories が両方の意味を持つ。multistory / multistorey も同じ分かれ方をする。

数と組むときは単数形になる点にも注意。a two-story house（2 階建ての家）、a multistory car park（英：立体駐車場／米では parking garage）。階の数え方も英米で違い、英の 1 階は ground floor、その上が first floorなので、the second floor が指す階がずれる。
