覚え方
muscle（筋肉）は、ラテン語 mūsculus（小さなネズミ、筋肉）から来ている。mūs（ネズミ）+ -culus（小さいものを表す指小辞）で、字義どおりには「小さなネズミ」という形である。
筋肉が動く様子や、皮膚の下で盛り上がる形が小さなネズミに似て見えたため、その語が筋肉を指すようになった。こうして「小さなネズミ」という比喩が、現在の「筋肉・筋」へと定着した。
mūsculus と同じイメージを持つギリシャ語 μῦς も、「ネズミ」から「筋肉」までを表した。muscle は mouse に似た動く小さなものと結びつけると覚えやすい。
