nominalの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 nōminālis（名の・名詞の・名義上の）に由来し、nōmen（名前・名称）+ -ālis（関係を表す形容詞語尾）という組み立て。英語の -al も「〜に関する」という形容詞を作るので、nominal は「名前に関する」から「名義上の・理論上の」へ広がった。
さらに「名目だけで実質が少ない」という意味から、nominal fee（ごくわずかな料金）のように「ごくわずかな」という用法も生まれた。nom を見たら「名前・名義」と考えると、nominal は「名前だけの」、denominate は「名前を付ける」、nominate は「名前を挙げる」と結び付けやすい。
