out- の背後は *ūt-（外へ）で、比べる基準の線から突き出るイメージがつかめると、この out- の一群がまとめて読める。sell の背後は *selh₁-（取る・つかむ）で、もとは「手渡す・引き渡す」ような行為だった。
補足: 主語は商品でも会社でもよい（This model outsells all the others.）。活用は outsell / outsold / outsold。
