oxygen はフランス語 oxygène を通じて入った語で、ὀξῠ́ς（鋭い・激しい）+ γένος（生まれ）から成る。前半は印欧祖語の「鋭い・尖った」を表す語根につながるとされ、後半は「産む・生み出す」を表す語根につながる。
酸の形成に関わると考えられたことから「酸を生み出すもの」という組み立てで名づけられた oxygen は、現在では呼吸と燃焼に不可欠な元素「酸素」を指す。oxy- は「鋭い・酸っぱい」方向、-gen は「生み出す」と覚えると、oxygen の意味と、hydrogen（水を生み出すもの）などの -gen を関連づけやすい。
