di-（二つ）+ oxide（酸化物） で「酸素原子を二つ持つ酸化物」。carbon dioxide（二酸化炭素）のように、化合物名では前に付く数の部分がそのまま原子の数を表す。
oxide の元にある oxygen（酸素）は、**h₂eḱ-（鋭い・尖った）+ ǵenh₁-（産む・生み出す） から「酸っぱさを生むもの」として名づけられた。酸素こそが酸のもとだと考えられた時代の命名で、acid（酸っぱい）・acute（鋭い）と同じ「尖り」が入っている。
補足: 数の部分は mono-（一）・di-（二）・tri-（三）と続く。carbon monoxide（一酸化炭素）と carbon dioxide の違いは酸素原子の数だけだが、毒性はまるで違う。
