ラテン語 perditiō = perdō + -tiō（動作や結果を表す名詞語尾）。perdō はさらに per-（徹底的に）+ -dō（置く） に分かれる。
英語ではまず「破滅・滅び」を指し、キリスト教の文脈で魂の永遠の滅び、すなわち地獄落ちを表すようになった。eternal perdition（永遠の滅び）のように宗教文学で使われる硬い語。per- は perfect（すっかり仕上げる）・persist（通し続ける）・perish（すっかり滅びる）と同じ「徹底的に」を担う。
