periphery（外縁・周辺）+ -al（〜に関する）。中心ではなく、その外側を取り巻く部分に関する、という語。
背後には *per-（前に・前方に）と *bʰer-（運ぶ）がある。中心のまわりを巡って運ばれる線、が periphery の像。*bʰer- は transfer（越えて運ぶ）・refer（元へ運ぶ）・offer（差し出す）と同じ流れ。
コンピュータでは本体の外側につなぐ「周辺機器」、医学では peripheral vision（視野の周辺部）、議論では a peripheral issue（本筋でない問題）。中心か、まわりかだけで意味が決まる。
