ラテン語 peripherīa に由来し、*per-（前に・前方に）と *bʰer-（運ぶ）の二つにさかのぼる。英語では中心に対する「外縁・周辺」を指し、on the periphery of the city（市の外れに）のように使う。
形容詞 peripheral は「周辺の・主要でない」で、a peripheral issue といえば本筋から外れた問題。コンピュータの周辺機器を peripherals と呼ぶのも同じ語。
*bʰer-（運ぶ）は transfer（越えて運ぶ→移す）・refer・conference と同族で、fer / pher という綴りに残っている。
