ラテン語 praelīmināris（前置きの・予備の）= prae-（前に）+ līmen（敷居・戸口）+ -āris（〜に関する）。本番という建物に入る前、まだ敷居のところにいる段階を表す。

そこから「予備的な・本番に先立つ」。preliminary results（暫定的な結果）・preliminary round（予選）・a preliminary hearing（予備審問）のように使い、名詞では「予選・予備段階」そのものを指す。

līmen（敷居）は eliminate（敷居の外へ出す→除去する）にも残っている。「まだ敷居の手前」と思い浮かべればよい。
