ラテン語 cognōscō（知るようになる・認識する、分詞 cognitus）＝ con-（完全に）+ nōscō（知る・学ぶ） にさかのぼる。
英語に入った当初は「よく知り抜いた→巧妙な・気の利いた」という褒め言葉だった。それが時代とともに「凝りすぎて今風でない」方へ傾き、「古めかしいが趣がある・風変わりでかわいらしい」という現在の意味になった。a quaint little village（古風で趣のある小さな村）が典型。
nōscō の背景 *ǵneh₃-（知る）は know（知る）・cognition（認識）・recognize（見て思い出す）・notice（気づく）と共通。「知る」から「凝った」へ、そして「時代がかった」へという意味の移り変わりが、この語の面白さ。
