ラテン語 redundō（あふれ出る・逆流する）の形 redundāns から。re-（後ろへ・再び）+ undō（波打つ・うねる）で、「波が押し戻されてあふれる」。

あふれた分は本体に要らない余りなので、「余分な・冗長な」になった。同じ内容を二度言う表現にも、人員整理で余剰とされる場合にも使う。

undō の仲間は abundant（あふれるほど豊かな）・inundate（水浸しにする）・undulate（波打つ）。und の形を見たら水の波。
