英語 shred（切り裂く）は古英語 sċrēadian（細かく切る）がそのまま受け継がれた語で、印欧祖語 *(s)ker-（切り離す）にさかのぼるとされる。
「刃物などで細かく切り刻む」という原義がそのまま残り、紙や布などを「ずたずたに切り裂く」という現代の意味で使われている。
*(s)ker- の仲間には score（切り込み→得点をつける）・shear（大きな鋏で刈る）・share（元は「切り分けたもの」→分け前）がある。sc(o)r/sh(r)/sh(e)ar を見たら「切る」と覚えるのがコツ。
