shut（閉じる）+ -er（〜する物）。shut の背後にあるのは *(s)kewd-（押す・駆り立てる）で、押して閉ざす動作が核にある。

「閉じるもの」だから、窓の雨戸や鎧戸が shutter。カメラのシャッターも、光の通り道を一瞬だけ開けて閉じる板のこと。動詞では shutter the factory（工場を閉鎖する）のようにも使う。

同じ要素から shoot・shot も来ており、「押し出す」と「押して閉める」が一つの系統に収まっている。
