sticky は stick（突き刺す・付着する）+ -y（〜の性質を持つ） という形。stick は、印欧祖語の *(s)tig-（尖った物で貫く・突く）や *stignéh₂-（鋭い先端で突き刺す）と結びつき、「突き刺さって離れない」イメージを持つ。
そこから sticky は「付着しやすい、粘着性のある」へ発展した。粘つく物は表面にくっついて離れにくいため、sticky situation のように「扱いにくい・困難な状況」という比喩にもなる。
stick を見たら「突き刺さって固定する」、-y を見たら「その性質がある」と読むのがコツ。sticker（貼り付く物）や stickiness（粘着性）も同じイメージで覚えられる。
