sub-（下の・下位の）+ script（書かれた文書） で、文字の下に小さく添える「下付き文字」。H₂O の 2 や、数式の添え字がこれにあたる。
上に添える場合は superscript（上付き文字）で、sub- と super- がそのまま上下を表している。プログラミングでは配列の添え字も subscript と呼ぶ。
script は *(s)kreybʰ-（引っかく・刻む）に連なり、describe・prescribe・manuscript・subscribe と同じ系統にある。
