sub-（下の）+ way（道）。「地下の道」から、アメリカ英語で「地下鉄」。イギリス英語では「地下道」の意味で、地下鉄は underground や tube と言う。
sub- はラテン語 sub（下に）から来ており、submarine（潜水艦）・subtitle（字幕＝下の題）と同じ。
take the subway to work（地下鉄で通勤する）、the nearest subway station（最寄りの地下鉄駅）。
