tunn はラテン語系の語で「樽」、el は「小さいもの」を作る部分。小さな樽のような中空の筒という像から、tunnel は山や地面の下を貫く「トンネル・地下道」を指すようになった。
英語では古く「漏斗」の意味もあり、周囲を囲まれた中空の通路というのが核である。a railway tunnel は「鉄道トンネル」、go through a tunnel は「通り抜ける」。動詞では tunnel under the road で「道路の下を掘り進む」。動物が地中に掘った通り道にも使える。
