subtitleの語源と覚え方

sub-（下の・下位の）+ title（表題・題名） で、本題の下に添える「副題」がもとの意味。
映画では画面の下に出る文字、つまり字幕を指す。位置が下であることと、主たるものに添えるものであることの両方で sub- が効いている。
字幕には、外国語を訳した subtitles と、耳の聞こえない人向けに音や話者の情報も入れる captions という区別がある。動詞にもなり、subtitled in English（英語字幕付きの）のように使う。
