古英語 wearnian（用心する・警告する）は、印欧祖語 *wer-（気づく・見張る）にさかのぼる。危険に気づいて身を守ること、また相手にも危険を知らせることから、warn は「警告する・事前に知らせる」になった。

wer- は「見張って気づく」というイメージで覚えよう。警告を受けて用心するのが warn、warning はその知らせ、wary（用心深い）や beware（注意せよ）も、危険を見張る感覚と結びつけると理解しやすい。
