alarm はラテン語 arma（武器・武具）に由来する。武器を取って備えるべき緊急事態を知らせる合図というイメージから、「警報・警告」へ意味が発展し、さらに警報を聞いたときの「恐れ」や、相手を「驚かせる」という意味にも広がった。

arma の中心にあるのは、危険に対して武装して備える場面。alarm を見たら、武器を取るほどの危険を知らせる音や合図と結びつけると、「アラーム」「警報」「恐れ」がまとめて覚えられる。
