appallの語源と覚え方

古フランス語 apalir（青ざめる・青ざめさせる）= a-（ラテン語 ad-、〜へ）+ palir。後半は pale（青白い）・pallid（血の気のない）と同じ部分で、血の気が引いて顔が白くなることを言った。
英語の appall では顔色より衝撃そのものに重心が移り、「ぞっとさせる」になった。be appalled at／by（〜に愕然とする）の形が多く、驚きの中でも嫌悪や憤りを伴う場合に使う。
