「自分自身の」を表したギリシャ語がそのまま英語の接頭辞 auto になり、今も新しい語を作り続けている。機械が人手を借りずに動くことを表す autom の automatic・automation・automaton・automate・automated・automatism・semiautomatic・automat が代表で、automotive・automaker は automobile（自分で動く車）から派生した産業の語。この automobile が縮んだのが auto で、切り離された mobile の側が独立して bookmobile・snowmobile・bloodmobile を作ったのは英語らしい二次的な広がり。

人や組織に向かうと「自分の力で・自分について」になる。autonomy・autonomous・nonautonomous（自分の法で治める→自治）、autarky（自給自足）、autocracy・autocrat・autocratic（独裁）、autodidact（独学者）、autobiography・autobiographical（自分で書く伝記）、autograph・autographed（自筆→サイン）、autopsy（自分の目で見る→検死）、autochthonous（その土地に生まれた）。医学では autism・autistic、autoimmune・autoimmunity、autoantibody、autolysis のように「自分自身に向かう」働きを指す。authent の authentic は「自分の手でなした者→本物の」からとされ、authenticate・authenticity・authentication・authenticator・inauthentic・unauthentic と広がった。冠詞と結んだ形からは taut の tautology（同語反復）・tautological が出ている。
