automatic（外の操作なしで動く）+ -ally（-ic で終わる形容詞から副詞をつくる） で「自動で・ひとりでに」。automatic の -mat- は *men-（思う・考える）に遡り、「自分から動き出す」が芯にある。
機械の動作（The door opens automatically.）だけでなく、「当然の結果として・手続きなしに」という比喩でも使う（The winner automatically qualifies for the final.）。
綴りの注意: -ic の形容詞から副詞を作るときは -ally が付き、automaticly とは書かない。basic→basically、tragic→tragically と同じ形。
