annoy（いらだたせる）+ -ing（現在分詞をつくる）。annoy は *en-（中へ）と *h₃ed-（憎む）の組み合わせに遡り、「嫌悪の中へ引き入れる」が芯。
-ing 形は「いらだたせる側」を表す。an annoying noise（うるさい音）は音のほうが原因で、I'm annoyed（私はいらついている）は人が受け手。-ing は原因、-ed は受け手という感情形容詞の基本形がそのまま当てはまる。
怒りの強さは angry > annoying ではなく、annoying は「じわじわ煩わしい」側の語。しつこい広告・止まらない着信音といった、繰り返される小さな不快によく使う。
