覚え方
ラテン語 antagonista を経て入った語で、芯は 正面から向き合う相手。根には *h₂ent-（前面・額）、*h₂ger-（集める）、*h₂eǵ-（駆り立てる）があり、「人の集まる場で、向かい合って競い合う者」というまとまりになっている。
物語では protagonist（主人公）に対する antagonist（敵役・立ちはだかる者）。必ずしも悪人とは限らず、主人公の目的を阻む存在であればよい。
薬理学では、受容体に結合して本来の作用を打ち消す拮抗薬を指し、作用を起こす agonist（作動薬）と対になる。筋肉でも、主働筋に対して逆向きに働く拮抗筋を antagonist と呼ぶ。
