フランス語 contester（異議を唱える）の系統を受けた語。もとは「言い立てて争う」が芯で、そこから名詞の「争い・競技」、動詞の「争う・異議を唱える」が出た。
*kom-（共に） が示すとおり、相手がいてはじめて成り立つ語である。名詞では a singing contest（歌のコンテスト）のように勝敗を競う催し、動詞では contest the results（結果に異議を申し立てる）のように正しさを争う場面で使う。
同族に protest（異議を申し立てる）・testify（証言する）があり、争いの場に証言を持ち出すという発想が共通する。名詞は前にアクセント、動詞は後ろにアクセントと、位置が動く点にも注意。
